This is Jack Andraka. This young man, only 16 years old, received one of the most important prizes in science, the Intel Science and Engineering Fair 2012, for his promising invention that allows detection of pancreatic cancer at very early stages.
The beginning of his research was born because a very close friend of Jack’s died of this type of cancer, when he was only thirteen years old. After searching on internet pages such as Wikipedia, Google and other search engines, he realized that until now there was no way to detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages and 85% were discovered when the chances of surviving were very low. .
So after doing countless searches and studying around 8,000 proteins found in the blood, he found mesothelin, which is found in early stage cancer patients. After conducting experiments at home and seeking support from different cancer research institutions, this young man created a paper sensor that costs 3 cents and takes 5 minutes to detect this disease.
Compared with the tests before, this invention is amazing, it is 168 times faster, 26,000 times cheaper and 400 times more sensitive than existing methods. His invention is in the process of being processed to develop the patent.
Now 18 years old, Jack works as an ambassador and researcher for early detection of cancer around the world. He is also developing the same procedure to detect lung and ovarian cancer.
