How to have original and successful ideas.
1. Distract your mind.
Assuming that this is the case, so much time focused on the same thing can blind us and prevent us from thinking differently to reach new results.
Adam’s advice is to simultaneously have other types of projects or hobbies; this is how we escape from the walls that enclose our potential to think differently.
Not surprisingly, a study found that a large number of novel prize winners, compared to other colleagues, are 22 times more likely to be dancers or magicians, 12 times more likely to write poetry and 2 times more likely to play an instrument.
2. Create lots of ideas.
In the book Art & Fear, we find a rather interesting experiment:
A ceramics teacher divided his students into two groups. The first was going to be graded by the number of pieces they created; so that the greater the weight of their work, the more grade they would get.
The other group would be judged on the quality of the piece; so they just had to create one.
It turned out that the best quality jobs were in the group that had to create the most pieces!
Beethoven composed more than 300 pieces, not just 9 symphonies!
Do not pigeonhole yourself in just one idea. Create, create and create.
3. Give yourself time.
Usually, right after we think of an idea, we think it’s incredibly good; and in most cases it is not.
Adam’s advice is to take some time. 1 or 2 days, and come back with fresh eyes and more goals to finish it.
Remember that by nature we like fast results. That is why we hardly have an idea, our first impulse is to think that it is very good.
