Your 20’s are destined to demand you. While your friends are enjoying the weekend and going out on Thursday nights, you can be growing your business and laying the foundation for future success.
Millennials and Gen Z have great opportunities at their fingertips. While our parents’ generation had to invest their time and labor in a corporation, the iGeneration and internet generation have a faster and more fun alternative. Since we grew up with technology, we have a competitive advantage in building brands that rely on digital marketing and technology.
Whether you want to create the next Snapchat, start a marketing agency, or become an influencer on Instagram, it’s time to stop checking social media and start working on your own business.

Tips to create a successful business in your 20’s to achieve financial independence.
1. Start a side job.
Most people underestimate how much time they have after work, assuming you have a standard 9 to 5 shift. If you have a job you don’t like and want to be your own boss, stop complaining about the terrible job and take action. . Just a cup of coffee after work and start fighting from 6pm to 2am in the business you want to start.
If you’re an artist, start posting videos on YouTube about the details behind your process. Open an E-commerce store on Shopify. Promote your products on Instagram. All this you can do while you work. Best of all, you do it while receiving someone else’s check.
2. Stop drinking.
If you are really passionate about entrepreneurship, you will quickly understand that weekends are the most productive time to complete tasks. You can literally work 20 hours on the weekend to grow your brand.
That’s not going to happen if you go out to bars on Friday and Saturday nights. First of all, you’re going to drain your bank account by buying shots for all your friends. Second, you won’t be productive if you’re hungover.
Start by setting your alarm for 6:30 am on the weekends. Work all day, you will have no regrets missing a few nights if you are in your 30’s and have a million dollar business.
3. Get up early.
Thomas Jefferson once said, “The sun has never found me in my bed for 50 years.” Apple CEO Tim Cook is known for getting up early and sending corporate emails at 4:30am. The youngest CEO in the NBA, Brett Yormark, gets up at 3:30 in the morning so he can get to the office at 4:30.
When it comes to business, the early bird catches the worm. You can judge on offense and not on defense, which allows you to work to grow your business.
Make sure you put the alarm clock on the other side of the room, which will force you to get out of bed and not press snooze. Do 50 push-ups in 5 minutes after turning off your alarm to really get you up.
4. Build a personal brand.
It amazes me how much time people spend promoting themselves on social media, without having a website that gives people more information or a place where they can contact them.
Everyone should check to see if their first and last name are available on GoDaddy. If it isn’t, put your middle name and what you do as part of the URL (example: SarahSmithNYCArtist.com). The next time you go to a business meeting, you will be amazed at how impressed people are by your professional website.
5. Become an expert contributing content.
In addition to owning a marketing agency, I am also a partner in an e-commerce that sells dermatological products. We are constantly looking for mentions from Glamour, Bustle and Teen Vogue. Do you know what I found out? Many writers for well-known sites are college students.
If you love sports, start by contacting sites like YardBarker to become a supporter. If you love fashion, what are you waiting for to write to Teen Vogue? This will boost your personal brand, give you credibility and you will find opportunities you never imagined.
6. Talk it out.
When you are an entrepreneur, you live on a deserted island. No one will notice all the work you do every day. Your friends who work 9 to 5 won’t understand what your business means to you.
Since entrepreneurship can be lonely, make sure you have someone to talk to. Whether it’s your boyfriend or girlfriend, mom or dad, or a mentor you can trust; to grow, you must have someone to listen to you on this adventure.
7. Be patient.
The problem with the digital age we live in is that people are impatient. Everyone expects results “for yesterday”.
Bill Gates famously said: “Most overestimate what they can do in a year and underestimate what they can do in 10”.
In order to build a business, you need to know how to be patient for the long haul. Don’t think about where you want your business to be in a year; think about where you want it in 10 years and how you are going to execute it so that your ambitions bear fruit. If you are in your 20’s, what will set you apart as an entrepreneur is patience. Make sure you move fast to get things done but be patient to receive the gains in the long run.
I have had my company for 7 years. I know that 96% of businesses fail before the age of 10. I keep this statistic in my mind every day, because I want to be part of the 4% that make it past 10 years.
Every year that you celebrate the anniversary of your business, your muscles will continue to grow.
8. Make money.
I can’t stand people who call themselves entrepreneurs. A simple question separates the contenders from the pretenders: Are you generating income? Many people say that they are “breaking” them in their “entrepreneurial adventure”, but when you dig a little, they are not generating anything.
If you are not making money from your business, you need to start and start fast. Just like a hockey team needs to score to win the game, your business needs to make money to be considered a business. Stop pretending and start selling your product or service.
9. Meet millionaires.
Monthly try to meet with millionaires. You will be surprised to know that there is no secret to being successful in business. You will learn that hard work brings better luck and success. You will also be inspired and motivated by hearing from someone who has succeeded in the business world.
If you try to meet Evan Spiegel from Snapchat, you won’t have much luck. However, you’ll be surprised how many CEOs of multi-billion dollar companies are willing to meet you if you’re persistent.
Don’t think for a second that you’re the only one looking to gain value from the meeting. CEOs and founders who know you, who are probably in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s; they will ask you many questions. The reason? Their customers will probably be your age, and they understand the spending power of millennials and Gen Z.
10. Become an expert in SEO and paid advertising.
Do you want to know a more efficient way to grow your business than attending networking events? Move up in the Google ranking so that people can contact you directly. Whether you just graduated from law school or are selling custom dog collars, SEO and paid advertising can literally help your business.
This is one of the main reasons why I have been able to grow my marketing agency quickly and efficiently.
There is no college or class you have to take to become an expert. You just have to get your hands dirty, read articles and watch videos. If you are starting a business, you need to be well versed in this area so that you can generate leads and sales every day.

11. Economy.
Earlier in this article, I talked about saving money by not going out to bars every weekend. Do your best to be frugal with your money. You never know when the economy gets tough or the biggest customer pulls out. If you’re spending lavishly, you won’t be prepared for tough times.
Every dollar is very important when you are starting a business. There’s a reason Warren Buffett has lived in the same house in Omaha, which he bought for $58,000 in 1958. Real winners are smart with their money.
